If you’re noticing persistent breakouts on your jawline and chin, you're not alone. These areas of your face are prone to acne due to various factors, from hormonal imbalances to lifestyle habits.
As a facialist and esthetician, I often see clients struggle with jawline and chin breakouts, and while they can be frustrating, the good news is they’re treatable with consistent habits, the right routine, and quality skincare products.
Here is my guide on how to prevent jawline and chin breakouts, and my recommended routine to keep breakouts at bay.
Causes of Jawline and Chin Breakouts
Breakouts around the jawline and chin are often linked to hormonal fluctuations. Hormonal acne is common during menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or times of stress when your body produces more androgens (hormones that stimulate oil production).
This excess oil can clog pores, leading to breakouts. Other contributing factors include, but are not limited to:
Touching Your Face: Regularly resting your hands on your jawline or touching your face can transfer bacteria to your skin.
Hair Products: Oils and ingredients in shampoos, conditioners, and styling products can clog pores along the jawline. Keep styling products like oils, gels, and sprays away from your jawline. Opt for non-comedogenic formulas and wash your hair regularly to prevent pore-clogging residue from settling on your skin.
Clean Your Phone: Your phone collects bacteria, which can transfer to your skin when held against your jawline and chin. Regularly wipe down your phone with disinfectant wipes to prevent this.
Eat a Balanced Diet: A diet high in anti-inflammatory foods like leafy greens, berries, and omega-3-rich fish can help reduce acne. Limit refined sugars and dairy, which can contribute to hormonal imbalances and breakouts.
Manage Stress: Stress can lead to hormonal fluctuations that cause breakouts. Practice stress-management techniques such as meditation, exercise, or deep breathing to keep your hormones in check. Having a good sleep routine and getting a full 7-8 hours also helps keep cortisol levels low.
Although we cannot control the hormonal fluctuations that come from menstrual cycles and pregnancy, we can control times of high stress, our diet, and what touches our face to prevent breakout instigators.
Take notice of any products you use in your hair or times you touch your face throughout the day and make the necessary changes! Your skin will thank you.
Establish a Consistent Skincare Routine
Consistency is key when it comes to managing breakouts. Here's a skincare routine specifically designed to target and prevent jawline and chin acne, along with my favorite products.
Cleanse
Cleanse your skin with a face wash that washes away dirt and excess surface oil. My favorites are Environ’s Sebu Wash Gel Cleanser and Biologique Recherche’s Lait S.R. — both thoroughly cleanse the skin and remove excess sebum from its surface, leaving your skin refreshed and clean.
Exfoliate
Exfoliate, purify, hydrate, tone, and balance the skin with Biologique Recherche’s Lotion P50 1970 or Lotion P50.
Lotion P50 1970 is an amazing vitamin-enriched exfoliating lotion that gently purifies, hydrates, tones, controls sebum and balances the skin, visibly improving many common skin conditions including white-heads, blackheads and symptoms of rosacea.
Lotion P50 is a multifunctional lotion that exfoliates, cleanses, and purifies the epidermis, helping it maintain its acid pH balance.
Mask
Rebalance the skin with a face mask like Biologique Recherche’s Masque Vivant. With a high concentration of purifying active ingredients, this mask regulates excess sebum and reduces breakouts.
Serums
Concentrated with active ingredients, serums penetrate deeply into the skin to deliver potent results.
My favorites to tackle breakouts are Biologique Recherche’s Complexe Iribiol and Extraits Tissulaires. These two serums work together to control excess oil production and balance your skin by keeping it hydrated. This duo creates an essential balance needed to prevent your skin from experiencing shine or clogged pores.
Biologique Recherche’s Complexe Iribiol serum balances and regulates sebum production while also reducing the appearance of dilated pores. The Extraits Tissulaires serum is an instant moisturizer with anti-dehydration properties. Keeping your skin hydrated is essential to keeping breakouts away!
Moisturize
Biologique Recherche’s Creme Dermopurifiante is a multi-functioning product that locks in moisture while also acting as a sebo-regulating cream. This cream purifies the epidermis to rid skin of imperfections like dilated pores, blackheads, microcysts, or blackheads and prevents them from reappearing.
If your breakouts are persistent or severe and linked to hormonal changes, it may be helpful to talk to a specialist such as a dermatologist or endocrinologist to discuss stronger interventions.
