4 Skin Tightening Tips From An Esthetician

One of the best ways to maintain youthful, firm skin is by preserving your skin’s elasticity.

As we age, our skin naturally loses its elasticity due to aging, sun exposure, and lifestyle choices. However, you can tighten and rejuvenate your skin with the right products, treatments, and routines.

My top 4 skin tightening tips range from professional treatments, at-home skincare routine, lifestyle changes, to facial exercises. Incorporate these recommendations into your daily routine to experience tightened, firmer skin without sagging.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a professional treatment you can receive from your facialist, or that you can do yourself at home with the right tools.

Microneedling involves using fine needles to create micro punctures into the skin. This stimulates collagen production and enhances skin elasticity to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars.

This Gold Roller from Environ is an amazing collagen induction tool that can be used from the comfort of your own home. Here’s a demonstration on how best to use your microneedle at home.

You can also request this treatment from your favorite facialist to get more dramatic results. A professional version of this treatment usually has longer, sharper needles and is more effective than doing it at home.

At-Home Skincare Routine

What you put on your skin daily to help maintain it is one of the most important ways that you can preserve your skin’s elasticity, and tighten your skin as a result.

Below are my favorite skin tightening products that you can use daily at-home. Don’t forget to apply products to your neck:

Crème ADN Métamorphique: Biologique Recherche’s Crème ADN Métamorphique is wonderful for combating sagging skin and has a strong tightening effect to help restore the skin’s elasticity and firmness.

Collagene Originel and VG Tensil Serums: Using serums such as Biologique Recherche’s Collagene Originel and VG Tensil in your skin routine will stimulate collagen to give the skin more volume and fullness, and tighten and firm the skin to combat sagging.

Vitamin A and C Products: Vitamin A and C products are collagen-boosting gold standards. Vitamin A synthesizes new collagen, renews damaged cells, and fights free radical damage. Environ’s AVST Moisturizer 1 and C-Quence Serum 1 are gentle, effective options for daily use.

These two products are amazing introductions to vitamin A without any downtime, peeling, or sensitivities. They can be used in both your morning and nighttime routines.

Incorporating red and orange colored fruits and vegetables in your diet will also increase the chances of retinol conversion in cells. Red and orange peppers, squash, papaya, and carrots are great examples of viable fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin C is another crucial antioxidant that fights free radical damage in the skin and helps to boost collagen production. Our cells can not survive without vitamin C! It is crucial to incorporate vitamin C into our skincare routines as our body constantly uses its vitamin C reserves to fight and repair environmental and sun damage.

Vitamin C also supports our skin’s brightening process. Incorporating fruits rich in Vitamin C such as citruses and kiwi also boost the immunity of our skin cells. My favorite Vitamin C product is Environ’s Mela Even Cream.

Lifestyle

Diet

Diet plays an important role in your skin’s elasticity. Try to avoid processed foods, and foods rich in starch and sugar! Diets rich in starch, sugar and processed food cause glycation in our skin — a process in which sugar molecules adhere to our skin’s collagen and elastin proteins, causing inflammation and collagen breakdown.

Prioritize foods like berries, leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish to nourish your skin from within.

Drinking water regularly throughout the day also keeps your skin hydrated and plump.

Sun Protection

There’s nothing that ages and sags the skin more than sun exposure.  Always apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, even on cloudy days, to protect your skin from sun damage.

Facial Exercises

Facial exercises, also known as face yoga, can help tone and tighten the muscles beneath your skin. Regularly practicing these exercises can enhance your skin's firmness and elasticity.

Jawline Definer

  1. Sit up straight and tilt your head back, looking towards the ceiling.
  2. Move your lower lip over your upper lip as far as possible.
  3. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times.
Cheek Lifter
  1. Smile as wide as you can, while keeping your lips closed.
  2. Place your fingers on the top part of your cheeks and lift them up.
  3. Hold for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times.
